Mild Steel vs Galvanised Steel for Malaysian Purchases

Base material and finish are different details

Mild steel describes a broad type of carbon steel, not a complete purchasing specification. Galvanising describes a zinc coating process; the underlying material can still be carbon steel. Therefore, 'galvanised' alone does not identify the steel grade, product dimensions or suitability for a particular application.

The American Galvanizers Association describes batch hot-dip galvanising as immersing fabricated steel in molten zinc. It distinguishes this process from continuous sheet galvanising and other zinc coatings. Ask which process and coating specification are being offered rather than relying on the appearance of a shiny surface.

Describe the actual exposure

METMalaysia characterises Malaysia's climate by high humidity and substantial rainfall. That makes exposure worth discussing, but a roofed workshop in Selangor, a frequently wet installation and a coastal location are not identical conditions. Explain where the material will be installed and whether it is sheltered.

Do not assume a coating provides a fixed service life simply because the product is used in Malaysia. Ask the project designer or coating specialist to specify the protection system for the actual environment, including any intended maintenance.

Ask how fabrication affects the finish

If components will be cut, drilled or welded after supply, tell the supplier and fabricator before placing the order. Confirm who will specify and carry out any required treatment of affected areas. Coating details should be considered with the fabrication plan, not left until the finished frame reaches site.

Compare the complete purchase scope

Request quotations with the same steel dimensions, grade, quantities and finishing requirements. A bare-material price and a coated-product price describe different scopes. Record transport, handling, additional processing and document requirements alongside the product price.
