Steel Pipe Ordering in Malaysia: Diameter, Thickness and Finish

Identify the sizing system

Ask whether the requested size is a nominal pipe designation or an actual outside diameter. If the project uses a particular pipe standard, include that reference with the size. Do not convert an informal inch label directly into a millimetre diameter and assume the result identifies the intended product.

ASME B36.10 concerns dimensional standardisation for welded and seamless wrought steel pipe. It is one reference used for defined pipe dimensions; it is not a universal specification for every pipe or tube sold in Malaysia. Follow the dimensional standard stated in your project documents.

Pair diameter with wall thickness

Include wall thickness, or the applicable schedule designation where the project uses one, together with the size and standard. Ask the supplier to confirm the quoted outside diameter and wall specification. A diameter alone does not fully describe the supplied pipe.

Avoid choosing a pipe for pressure service from diameter and a workshop description alone. Pressure, fluid, temperature, joining and other design requirements need qualified review. This guide is for purchasing communication, not pipe-system design.

State material, manufacture and finish

Record the required grade, product standard and any manufacturing description in the approved specification. Where welded or seamless manufacture is specified, repeat it in the enquiry rather than allowing the supplier to infer the requirement from the word 'pipe'.

Similarly, identify the requested finish. A silver appearance is not a complete galvanising specification, and a coated surface does not establish suitability for drinking water, pressure equipment or other controlled services. Ask the responsible project team to define those requirements.

Include end details and processing

Specify the required piece length and any relevant end preparation or connection details. If threading or cutting is needed, provide the scope and ask what services can be confirmed. A quotation for plain pieces should not be assumed to include fittings or processing.

When the pipe must connect to an existing component, identify the required connection standard and dimensions from the approved information. A photograph of the old item may help explain the enquiry, but it is not enough to confirm compatibility.

Complete the delivery enquiry

Send the quantity, delivery postcode, requested date and any document requirements. For a workshop or construction site in the Klang Valley, confirm the receiving contact and unloading responsibility before dispatch.

Request a quotation that repeats the agreed size, thickness, grade, finish and processing scope. This gives both the buyer and supplier a useful reference if the receiving team later needs to check what was ordered.
