Buying steel plate for a fabrication job in Malaysia starts with more than a thickness. The sheet dimensions, material grade, finish and cutting requirements determine whether two quotations are describing the same purchase.
Name the product and required surface
State whether the request is for plain steel plate or patterned chequered plate. If a drawing or approved material list specifies the pattern or surface arrangement, attach that information. A textured surface should not be treated as proof of suitability for every walking surface, ramp or wet area.

Confirm what thickness refers to
Ask the supplier to state the quoted thickness and its measurement basis. For patterned products, clarify whether the description refers to the base plate or another measurement convention. Do not compare two prices until both sellers confirm they are quoting the same description.
Include thickness tolerances when the project documents require them. A nominal figure on a short quotation does not by itself answer every tolerance or inspection question. Record any agreed clarification in the order confirmation.
Use clear sheet and cutting dimensions
Provide the required width and length with units, and identify full sheets separately from cut pieces. Informal labels such as 'four by eight' can be ambiguous without units and confirmation of the actual supplied dimensions. Repeat the agreed dimensions on your purchase order.
For cut pieces, send a numbered cutting list with quantities and any drawing revisions. Ask whether cutting can be arranged, what tolerances can be confirmed and how offcuts will be handled. Do not assume an advertised plate price includes processing or edge preparation.
Keep grade and documents attached to the enquiry
A thickness does not specify the material grade. Copy the required grade, standard and any document requirements from the project specification. If the plate is part of a designed assembly, any change should be approved by the responsible project team rather than selected only on price.
Where traceability is required, ask how supplied pieces will be linked to the relevant documents after cutting. Confirm the offered arrangement before ordering; a general brochure is not a substitute for documents tied to the actual material.
Plan handling before confirming delivery
Give the delivery postcode and describe the receiving location. Large sheets and cut plates may need a different unloading plan from small fabrication parts. Confirm the agreed delivery and unloading scope with the supplier and site team before dispatch.
