When a fabricator in Petaling Jaya asks for hollow sections, the first purchasing question is simple: square or rectangular? A clear description helps the supplier quote the intended product instead of guessing from a workshop nickname or photograph.
What the two names mean
SHS means square hollow section; RHS means rectangular hollow section. Both have a hollow profile, but the outside shape is different. A purchase description should identify the shape, outside dimensions, wall thickness and required material specification. A photograph can support an enquiry, but it cannot replace these details.
The Steel Tube Institute discusses square, rectangular and round structural tubing under particular specifications. Its material is useful background, not proof that a specific specification is required for every Malaysian project. Use the standard and grade stated in your own approved documents.

Write dimensions without ambiguity
Record all dimensions in the same unit. An illustrative RHS description is 100 mm x 50 mm outside dimensions, followed by the required wall thickness and piece length. This example explains ordering notation only; it is not a recommended size or a statement of stock availability.
Avoid ordering only by an informal description such as 'two-inch hollow'. Confirm whether an inch description is approximate, converted from millimetres or tied to a particular catalogue. Ask the supplier to repeat the agreed dimensions on the quotation.
Do not treat shape as a design shortcut
A square section and a rectangular section are not automatically interchangeable because their prices are similar. For load-bearing frames, connections or supporting members, use the engineer's approved section and orientation. Any proposed alternative should be reviewed by the responsible designer before purchase.
The same rule applies to wall thickness. A cheaper quoted thickness should not be accepted as a substitute merely to bring an order within budget. Separate commercial questions from engineering approval.
Prepare the fabrication and delivery details
Tell the supplier whether you need full pieces or a defined cutting list. Include the finish, quantity and documents required, and ask which cutting or handling services can actually be offered. Confirm any associated charges rather than assuming they are included.
For delivery in the Klang Valley, include the postcode, requested date and any access or unloading restrictions. These details help establish a realistic quotation and avoid a last-minute mismatch between the material and the receiving location.
Before you request a quote
- SHS or RHS, with outside dimensions in mm
- Wall thickness, grade and specified standard
- Finish, piece length and number of pieces
- Cutting list, document requirements and delivery postcode
Common purchasing questions
Is RHS always cheaper than SHS?
Not necessarily. Compare matching specifications, quantities and delivery terms; obtain a current quotation.
Can a supplier choose my structural section?
Use an engineer's approved specification for structural work. A purchasing enquiry is not a design calculation.
Important: This is general purchasing guidance, not structural design advice or a legal compliance determination. Follow approved project specifications and confirm current requirements with the responsible engineer or authority. Availability, prices, documents and delivery services must be confirmed for your enquiry.
