How to Compare Steel Quotations in Malaysia Beyond Price

Match the material before the price

Compare product type, dimensions, wall or plate thickness, grade, standard, finish and piece length line by line. A different thickness or grade is a different offer, not automatically a discount on the specified product. Ask the supplier to make every alternative explicit.

For designed assemblies, obtain approval for any proposed substitution before treating the alternative price as a usable option. Keep the original enquiry and the approved revision together so the commercial comparison follows the actual project requirements.

Use the same quantity basis

Check whether each price is per piece, per sheet, per kilogram, per tonne or a total for the order. Record the associated length or sheet dimensions where needed. A unit price without a defined quantity basis is not enough to establish a like-for-like comparison.

If mass-based pricing is used, clarify the stated basis and receiving method. If a cutting list creates offcuts, ask how the cutting charge and offcut ownership are treated. These details can explain why an apparently lower unit price gives a different order total.

Check processing and delivery exclusions

List cutting, drilling, finishing, packing, transport and unloading separately. Confirm what is included, what is chargeable and what the site team must arrange. Do not assume a product price includes all the work needed to make it ready for installation.

For a delivery to Petaling Jaya or another Klang Valley location, provide the same postcode and access information to each supplier. A collection price and a delivered price should not be compared as if they cover the same service.

Record commercial conditions
